During college Robert and four high school friends rode box cars fro St Paul all the way across country to just north of San Francisco. He moved to Phoenix AZ. after graduation. His first paying acting job was with a small traveling company performing light situation comedies for retired people in trailer parks. Robert worked for an aluminum company on graveyard shift, played basketball, slept four hours then did another show before going back to work at midnight. A friend at work recommended he audition for the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in a regional audition. Robert did and three years later graduated with honor the top of a 400 actor class. His later films have become more serious, with the hugely successful Tom Hanks vehicle Forrest Gump (1994) and the Jodie Foster film Contact (1997), both critically acclaimed movies.
