Nico Birnbaum was born in Kiel. Although being an actor from the north of Germany, he frequently gravitated towards the more sunnier south of Europe. He thus studied literature and philosophy in Aix-en-Provence in France, wrote part of his thesis on Franz Kafka in Florence and also lived in Rome where he worked as a translator and German teacher. He gained his first professional acting experience at the Florentine film school "Scuola Nazionale die Cinema Indipendente". Here he acted in a number of short films and took part in his first feature film "Reality News" by Salvatore Vitiello. After accomplishing his PhD with summa cum laude in 2013, he gave up his academic career in favour of pursuing his dream of becoming a professional actor. He has since played supporting roles in several TV-series such as "Heldt", "Die Spezialisten - Im Namen der Opfer" or "SOKO Wismar". The filming of the Hollywood movie "Operation Mincemeat" with him has been completed in March 2020. In 2021 he played the lead as a drag queen Madita in "Nihat - Alles auf Anfang" and the lead as circus artist Anton Bremgartner in the feature film "Furioso" alongside with Jan Josef Liefers and Katharina Thalbach. Also in 2021 he took part among others in "Babylon Berlin", "Auris - Die Frequenz des Todes" or "I Racconti della Domenica".

Nico has directed music videos and narrative pieces as well as commercials for brands like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Starbucks and Snapchat among others. Nico's films have been showcased in Wired, BBC, Indi Wire and New York Times, and film festivals as Sundance, Venice Film Festival, Tribeca, SXSW, Los Angeles Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, BAFICI, Siggraph, Holland film festival, Ars Electronica, among others, and collected Gold and Bronze statues in Cannes, Clio, AICP, and London LIA awards.
